Lines and Wrinkles: What a Consultation Can Help You Understand

Lines and wrinkles are a natural part of how the face changes over time, but they do not all develop for the same reason.

Some appear mainly with expression, while others remain when the face is relaxed. Skin quality, facial movement and individual anatomy can all influence what you see.

A consultation is an opportunity to understand what is contributing to the changes you have noticed and what, if anything, may be appropriate to consider.

You do not need to know which treatment you want before you come in.

Start with what you have noticed

It is often more useful to describe what bothers you than to ask for a particular treatment.

Perhaps you notice lines when you smile or frown. Maybe an area looks different when your face is relaxed, your makeup no longer sits in the same way, or you simply feel that you look more tired than you feel.

These details help us understand what you would genuinely like to improve.

It is just as important to tell us what you want to preserve. If keeping natural expression is important to you, or you want any change to be subtle and difficult for others to identify, that should be part of the conversation from the beginning.

What happens during the assessment?

We look at your face as a whole, rather than focusing only on an individual line.

Depending on your concern, this may include assessing your face at rest and during expression, your facial movement, skin quality, proportions and any previous aesthetic treatment.

This helps us distinguish between concerns related predominantly to movement, skin quality or other changes in the face, as these do not necessarily benefit from the same approach.

Most importantly, an assessment is not about finding something to treat in every area. It is about deciding whether treatment is appropriate and whether it is likely to make a meaningful difference to the concern you have described.

Sometimes the most appropriate advice is to treat less, wait, consider a different approach or do nothing at all.

Skin quality matters too

Fine lines are not always best approached with an injectable treatment.

Skin condition, sun exposure, hydration and your existing skincare routine can influence how fine lines and texture appear.

Where relevant, we can discuss your current skincare and whether improving or simplifying it may be helpful. More products and stronger active ingredients do not necessarily mean better results, particularly if the skin becomes dry or irritated.

Any prescribed skincare or relevant medical treatment should also be discussed during your consultation.

If treatment is being considered

A good consultation should help you understand both what a treatment may improve and what it cannot realistically change.

We will discuss why an option may or may not be suitable for you, the expected outcome and limitations, relevant risks and side effects, aftercare and follow-up, and any reasonable alternatives.

This is also the time to talk about the result you want.

For one person, that may mean softening certain lines while maintaining natural movement. For another, the priority may be improving skin quality or addressing a different area altogether.

Natural-looking treatment is not about removing every line. It is about making considered changes that still look like you.

Keep your expectations realistic

Every face is different, and no aesthetic treatment can guarantee an exact result.

Older photographs can sometimes be useful if you want to show how your face has changed or what feels most like you. They can help guide the discussion, but they should not be treated as a promise that an earlier appearance can be recreated.

If treatment is appropriate, we will explain what we would realistically expect it to achieve and when the result can be properly assessed.

You do not have to decide on the day

There should be enough time for you to understand your options before deciding whether you want to proceed.

You can ask questions, consider the information you have been given and take time to decide.

If you have upcoming travel, work commitments or an important event, mention this during your consultation so that treatment timing, recovery and follow-up can be considered properly.

Choosing not to have treatment is also a completely valid outcome of a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know which treatment I want?

No. Tell us what you have noticed and what you would like to improve or understand. The assessment comes first; treatment is considered afterwards.

Can I discuss lines and skin texture at the same consultation?

Yes. Looking at both can be helpful because facial movement and skin quality may contribute differently to what you are seeing.

Will I be advised to treat every area where there are lines?

No. The aim is not to remove every line or treat every area. Recommendations should be based on what concerns you, your individual assessment and whether treatment is likely to provide a worthwhile benefit.

Do I have to have treatment after my consultation?

No. There is no obligation to proceed. Sometimes waiting, treating less or having no treatment at all is the most appropriate advice.
